Promise of the Month - August, 2005

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV)

The LORD tells us that He will guide us if we trust in Him, and not act according to our own understanding. Let's look at some ways that our own understanding may differ from God's word.

MAN'S UNDERSTANDING
GOD'S WORD
Try to fulfill myself in my life
X Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, and whoever will lose his life for my sake will find it. (Matthew 16:24-25 WEB)
Earn as much as possible because when he dies, the one with the most toys wins.
X For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his life? Or what will a man give in exchange for his life? (Matthew 16:26 WEB)
Get Rich!
X For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. (Luke 18:26 KJV)
Keep everything I earn.
X Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.  (Proverbs 3:9-10 NIV)
Grow up. Act your age
X Jesus called a little child to himself, and set him in the midst of them, and said, "Most assuredly I tell you, unless you turn, and become as little children, you will in no way enter into the Kingdom of Heaven." (Matthew 18:2-3 WEB)
Be proud of yourself.
X Whoever therefore humbles himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. (Matthew 18:4 WEB)
Look out for number 1.
X Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. (Philippians 2:3 NIV)
Nice guys finish last.
X Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. (Matthew 5:5 KJV)

X Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. (Matthew 5:8 KJV)
Don't submit to anyone. Keep your pride.
X Likewise, you younger ones, be subject to the elder. Yes, all of you gird yourselves with humility, to subject yourselves to one another; for "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble." (1 Peter 5:5 WEB)
X ...whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. Whoever desires to be first among you shall be your bondservant, (Matthew 20:26-27 WEB)
Do whatever you must to be first.
X But many will be last who are first; and first who are last. (Matthew 19:30 KJV)
X So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few are chosen." (Matthew 20:16 WEB)
Being humble never gets you anywhere. X Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. (Matthew 23:12 WEB)
Put yourself above others. X Therefore whatever you desire for men to do to you, you shall also do to them; for this is the law and the prophets. (Matthew 7:12 WEB)
It can't be wrong if everyone is doing it. X Enter in by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter in by it. How narrow is the gate, and restricted is the way that leads to life! Few are those who find it. (Matthew 7:13-14 WEB)
Trust your heart. X The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? (Jeremiah 17:9 KJV)
Watch out who you give to. They may use it wrongly.
X Give to everyone who asks you, and don't ask him who takes away your goods to give them back again. (Luke 6:30 WEB)
Don't loan money to anyone that may not be able to repay.
X If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive back as much. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing back; and your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil. (Luke 6:34-35 WEB)
Hate your enemies. Get even with those who abuse you.
X But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you. (Matthew 5:44 KJV)
Do good works so that you can be repaid for your good.
X ..."When you make a dinner or a supper, don't call your friends, nor your brothers, nor your kinsmen, nor rich neighbors, or perhaps they might also return the favor, and pay you back. But when you make a feast, ask the poor, the maimed, the lame, or the blind; and you will be blessed, because they don't have the resources to repay you. For you will be repaid in the resurrection of the righteous." (Luke 14:12-14 WEB)
Do good works so that you can go to heaven when you die
X For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV)

X who has saved us and called us to a holy life-- not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time (2 Timothy 1:9 NIV)
It must be right because it feels so good. X There is a way which seems right to a man, But in the end it leads to death. (Proverbs 14:12 WEB)
Hide your evil motives.
X All a man's ways seem right to him, but the LORD weighs the heart. (Proverbs 21:2 NIV)

Jesus Christ acted according to the Father's will always, and never leaned on man's understanding. "Have this in your mind, which was also in Christ Jesus, who, existing in the form of God, didn't consider it robbery to be equal with God, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, yes, the death of the cross." (Philippians 2:5-8 WEB). Man's understanding says that the subjects should sacrifice themselfes for the King. "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8 NIV) Wow!
